How to Target the Right Audience for a Micro-SaaS Launch

A common launch mistake: targeting "small business owners" or "developers" as if either is one audience. Both are enormous, varied groups, and a launch budget spread across all of them reaches almost nobody deeply. Micro-SaaS launches work best when the targeting is uncomfortably narrow.

Narrower than feels right is usually correct

If your product is a scheduling tool for hair salons specifically, targeting "small business owners" wastes most of your budget on restaurant owners, plumbers, and freelancers who will never convert. Targeting "hair salon owners" feels small, but it's the group actually likely to click, sign up, and stick around:

Target where your specific audience already gathers

Every niche has its own subreddits, Facebook groups, newsletters, and interest pages. Platform interest targeting (Meta, Reddit) lets you reach people already active in those spaces directly, rather than hoping broad demographic targeting happens to catch them.

Use the language your audience actually uses

A micro-SaaS ad that uses generic startup language ("streamline operations," "boost productivity") doesn't register as relevant to someone in a specific trade. Mirror the vocabulary your audience actually uses for their problem — "no-shows," "double-booking," "chair time" for a salon tool, for instance — not generic business-speak.

Small, cheap tests beat one big confident bet

With a limited launch budget, run several small tests across a few narrow audience segments rather than committing the whole budget to one broad audience guess. $20-30 per segment over a few days tells you which specific niche actually responds, which is far more useful than a bigger spend against an untested broad audience.

Revisit targeting after your first real customers

Once you have even a handful of paying customers, look at who they actually are — not who you assumed they'd be. It's common for a micro-SaaS to launch targeting one persona and discover a completely different one is actually converting. Let real data override your original guess.
