How to Write Ad Copy for a Home Services Business

HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing — home service ads compete in a category where trust matters more than creativity. Someone with water on their kitchen floor isn't looking for clever copy; they're looking for proof you'll show up and won't rip them off. Here's how to write for that decision.

Lead with response time, not your slogan

For anything urgent, "how fast can you get here" is the first question in the customer's head. Answer it in the headline:

Put a real trust signal in the first line

Licensing, insurance, years in business, or a review count are the fastest way to overcome "is this a scam" hesitation, which is real for home services more than almost any other category:

Example

"Licensed & insured. 4.9 stars, 300+ local reviews. Free estimates."

Separate emergency copy from routine-maintenance copy

A burst pipe and an annual furnace tune-up are different buying decisions with different urgency levels — write different ads for each rather than one generic "plumbing services" ad trying to cover both:

Make the price question easy to answer

"Free estimate" or "upfront pricing, no surprise fees" directly addresses the second-biggest hesitation after trust — people have been burned by vague home-service quotes before, and naming your pricing approach upfront differentiates you from competitors who dodge the question.

Use call-first ads, and target tight

Most home service leads come by phone, not by form. Prioritize call extensions or call-only ad formats. And keep targeting to your actual service radius — a plumber shouldn't pay to reach people 40 minutes away who were never going to book, no matter how good the ad is.
