How to Write Ad Copy for an Auto Repair Shop
Auto repair carries a specific kind of distrust — most people have a story about a shop that upsold them on something they didn't need. Your ad copy's job is to signal, immediately, that you're not that shop. Generic "quality service" language doesn't do that. Specifics do.
Lead with transparency, not just expertise
"ASE Certified Technicians" is a credential most people don't know how to evaluate. A promise about how you operate is more persuasive to someone who's been burned before:
- Generic: "Expert Auto Repair You Can Trust"
- Specific: "Free Diagnostic. We Show You the Problem Before Any Work Starts."
Name the specific service people are searching for
Nobody searches "auto repair" when their check engine light is on — they search the actual problem. Match that specificity:
"Check Engine Light On? Free Scan, No Appointment Needed."
Split routine maintenance from urgent repair copy
An oil change and a transmission failure are different decisions with different timelines — write to each separately:
- Routine: "Oil Change + Multi-Point Inspection, $39.99 This Month."
- Urgent: "Car Won't Start? Same-Day Diagnosis Available."
Put a review count or years-in-business number in the copy
A specific number ("500+ five-star reviews," "serving [town] since 1998") is more credible than an adjective, because it's independently checkable. Skepticism is the default emotional state for someone reading an auto repair ad — give them something concrete to reduce it.
Target close, and consider day-parting for emergencies
Most people choose a shop within a 5–10 mile radius of home or work. If you offer emergency/same-day service, consider running urgent-repair ads more heavily during business hours when someone's most likely to need immediate help, rather than spreading budget evenly across all hours.
